    Mensmerize: Houston Custom Clothier

As long as you have your suit and tie, you can show many people a few things. A tailored suit sharpens anyone’s persona, but do you know what goes into finding a custom suit that fits you? I had the pleasure of going behind-the-scenes with Mensmerize to bring you details about the process and tips for your style.

    Dagny Zenovia: Mensmerize Houston Bespoke

Mensmerize, founded by Alex Dawotola, is a new men’s custom clothier in Houston near Highway 6. As you step into Mensmerize, you are met with the soulful sounds of Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and Otis Redding. A chill and sophisticated clothier set up to provide quality collaboration and style. I met with David Rochez, Mensmerize image consultant. He showed me the many customization options a potential client has from buttons to collars to fabrics.

“The thing that people sometimes don’t understand about bespoke is that it’s all for you, your body frame, your body structure. With bespoke it’s all customization. Whatever you want to do we can do it.” – David Rochez

Bespoke means “custom-made” or “made to order.” (Learn something new everyday) Regardless of what stye you are looking for, the options they offer can fit your needs and inspire new looks. Now, let’s get into the process of custom suiting.

First, the measurements: depending on what you are ordering, David will have you try on a button down shirt, jacket, and pants to determine the fit you are looking for. He then uses a tape measure to get your exact measurements. A conversation results discussing the length of the shirt, fit of the jacket, and other things depending on what you are looking for.

“It all depends on the fit. If it’s a business suit, you want it to be not too tight and not too loose. If you are more fashionable, you want the crop legs, show more cuff of the shirt, and be a little more fitted. We know fashion, that’s what we do. So there are always two different kinds of customers.” – David Rochez

Second, the fabric: there is no limit on color, feel, and weight plus endless combinations to make.

“Since I’m the image consultant I  can narrow their choices to what would work for them. I can show them the main colors for fall or cuts for suits as a starting point.” – David Rochez

Third, customization: from stitching to inner lining to felt accents, this probably would be my favorite part of the process. You can add so much personality to a suit.

The whole process takes about an hour to an hour and a half, which can be done at Mensmerize or David can travel to your office or home. It really adds a more intimate and wholesome side to shopping for your wardrobe.

To add to this exclusive behind-the-scenes scoop, David also shared some tips for fall men’s fashion. Since we do not usually have a cold fall season in Houston, pay attention to the weight of the fabric you choose to wear to avoid sweating. If you don’t want to wear a jacket, you can wear a vest or waist coat to accessorize your outfit.

Mensmerize is currently offering a 20% discount for all clients during October. Check out their work, make an appointment, and sharpen your wardrobe.

  • How To Dress Boss Fabulous

    How To Dress Boss Fabulous

Building a wardrobe and developing a signature style can be a lot of fun. Not only do you avoid feeling like you have nothing to wear when you look in your closet, but you also feel good in what you are wearing and add an additional outlet to express your personality.

I started developing a signature look when I was in college. I have always been drawn to elegant minimalism and funky attitudes. My wardrobe has evolved to incorporate my changing preferences in taste and comfort. Due to the constant questions about my style, shopping routine, and wardrobe pieces, I guess my little wardrobe personal project has gone well. So, to start the style segment of my blog, I want to share with you some basic tips and inspiration to build a signature wardrobe.

The first thing to remember is to not aspire to fit into certain trends or expectations. Being stylish or fashionable is all about personality and self-love.

    1. Create Your Style Profile

Take note of what colors, shapes, and moods resonate with you. Do you prefer a specific era of fashion or love a certain celebrity’s style? Collect images of outfits you admire, think you could wear, and would like to aspire to look like. When I was creating my style, I used magazines and saved google images on my desktop computer. Now you can use Pinterest not only to find images but to find information on how to dress for your figure depending on cut, pattern, and color.

I love bright colors, vintage cuts, chic lines, and funky attitude. My fashion icons range from Audrey Hepburn to Cleopatra Jones to Olivia Pope. I wanted my everyday look to be casual chic with a pop of personality influenced by being a southern belle and world traveler.

    2. Build Your Wardrobe

Once you got an idea of what your overall look will be, it’s time to assess your closet and go shopping. It will take some time to phase out the pieces that do not fit your evolving style and replace them with items that will enhance your wardrobe. Start with statement pieces that portray your new signature style.

I started by collecting blazers, A-line and pencil skirts, chiffon or silk blouses, and cute loafers and heels. I could mix-and-match some of my old tops and accessories with my new pieces and could see which pieces in my closet I could give away. In college I shopped at Forever 21, Macy’s, TJ Maxx, and DSW as well as some thrift shopping. Now I shop at New York & Company, The Limited, DSW, Aldo, and Nordstrom Rack plus thrifting.

    3. Dress Like A Boss

Now it is time to master the dress routine. As you continue to build your wardrobe, you will develop a catalog of outfits in your closet. Every piece should be able to pair with more than one other item. Experiment with color-blocking and pairing patterns. Learn how to “recycle” your clothes by mixing and accessorizing to stretch your wardrobe. I have heard some people document the items in their closet on their iPad or other electronic device. That is cool, if that works for you. Overtime I documented my closet in my mind. In the morning or while preparing for a special occasion, I look at my closet and create the outfit in my mind then pull out the pieces that work with what I imagined. Ironically this only takes a few minutes, but people usually comment on how I must wake up at 4am to get dressed. We will keep this secret to ourselves…ok?

Here are a few fashionistas I admire:

How would you describe your style profile? If I started a LookBook series on my blog, what details would you find most helpful?

Just Sharing: My First Modeling Gig

As the rain poured and rush hour traffic in downtown Washington, DC became more congested, my friend and I braced the elements in cocktail dresses and platform pumps to catch a cab and make our way to our first professional fashion event – DC Fashion Week’s Corjor International Showcase.

In September of 2011, I attended a free event for DC Fashion Week in the Dupont Circle area.  Among the glamorous and fashionably inclined, I met the designer and the photographer for Elizabeth St John (whom I later interviewed here).  After the introductions and chatting, they invited me to model in their showcase that weekend.  I thought it sounded like a fun opportunity…so I agreed.  That Saturday, from 2pm until around 9pm, I witnessed the exciting behind-the-scenes experience of being a part of a real fashion show.  From hair and make-up, to dress fittings, to runway practicing, to mini dramas among the organizers, it was a fun-filled afternoon.  The event took place at the Hillwood Estates, which includes a museum and lovely gardens.  I must admit, once I entered the gates to the estate, I felt as if I was transported to southern France.  It really was beautiful.  The models I met at the show were also welcoming.  Once they found out that this event was my first modeling experience, they immediately extended a fashionable-helping-hand and gave me advice on how to get ready and which business cards I should pick up.  We also had fun practicing power-walking on the cobble-stone runway.  I ended up modeling for all three designers at this event and met some wonderful people.

I realized that I never got a chance to share this experience or these photographs.  Since there was no official photo shoot, it was hit-or-miss until some pictures were posted on websites or social media.  I figured now is a better time than any to share this.

I love learning new things and I think modeling can truly be an art form, depending on how you look at.  It reminded a lot of performing in theatre.  I don’t necessarily list “model” under my tag line, but I do enjoy acting for the camera.  Below are a few photos from me and the photographers that were at the event.  “Enjoy darling!”
