Where In The World Is Dagny

It is finally time for me to come back to YouTube. I am so excited to be filming again and to share all my new content. So, first, where in the world I have been?

As of filming this clip, I have been living and working in Accra, Ghana for one whole year. Crazy, right? The growth I have experienced during this journey is really wonderful, which is why now is the perfect time to share my adventures and tips. Check out the video for my life updates, new content coming to my channel, and all that good stuff.

What Inspires A Move For Change

With the internet, you can find inspiration everywhere. From stories to classes, there is something to keep all of us entertained or enlightened. Through self-publishing and social media, so many brilliant ideas are slipping past barriers and amplifying their voices. I see this as a movement of sorts. A move for change, awareness, and responsibility.

One of the many things I want my blog/platform to provide is a supportive space for other creatives, innovators, and leaders. I am inspired everyday by people and projects I come across on social media because they illustrate how to effectively enhance a movement. From documentaries to community programs to merchandise, we have amazing people pushing beyond a hashtag or march. They are building a legacy. It is important for any movement to live past the hype. To survive the trends, it takes dedication and strategy to maintain clear priorities but also evolve with the issues.

I want to share with you some of the projects I have seen recently that inspired this post. Initially, I was going to write about the discrepancies I have observed within social justice movements today (which I might still reflect on in a later post), but after reading and watching these projects, I have hope that we are moving in the right direction.

Amani Yahya is Yemen’s first female rapper and recently did a project shedding light on women’s rights.

The Dinner Table Doc is a documentary and community initiative to change the narrative and images of women of color in the media. The director went to Agnes Scott College (which I went to my freshmen year…so we are half scottie sisters!) and she is building a really important platform.

Did you know there is an afro-mexican community in Mexico? Do you know why Black History Month should exist in Mexico? Check this video from Plumas Atómicas.

The Invention of E.J. Whitaker is an upcoming indie comic book about a woman of color who invents a flying machine in 1901. I am excited to read this adventure once they publish it.

My Creative Connection is a blog that shares stories, resources, and advice to help creatives build their network and achieve their dreams. Their twitter chat #blkcreatives is one of the most encouraging social media experiences.

Revolt TV did an excellent documentary about Women DJs around the world who are making an impact on dance culture.

An article reflecting on identity and violence as a first-generation American, this is a discussion I know too well and appreciate more voices bringing light to.

This movement is not about pointing fingers or excluding others. It is about being unapologetically authentic and aware of the importance of your influence. What has inspired you recently? What projects would you add to this list?

  • New chapter. New challenge.

    Blog_30Layers

The beginning of a new month can be exciting, frustrating, inspiring, and encouraging (not exactly in that order, but you get the idea). This fall I started a new chapter in my life as I pursue another adventure to get closer to achieving my purpose in life. With every new chapter, I try to add something new to make the experience wholesome. On twitter I came across GG Renee’s #30Layers30Days Self-Discovery Challenge. If you sign up for her newsletter, for the month of September she will send an e-mail with prompts to get you to reflect on what your reality is now and what your future can be. I love this idea!

This past summer I got a new journal as a gift and had been pondering what type of thoughts to fill it with. When I was younger I would write daily about my activities for the day and slowly…got…bored. A few years ago I started an idea journal, filling it with visions and things I wanted to accomplish. I have yet to fill that journal, so I wanted this new one to take on a different direction. I’m going to start it with this challenge. I will be tweeting some of my responses and will probably do a blog post about the whole experience at the end of the month.

I would like to share with you Day 1:

    START. STOP. CONTINUE.

START:  What do you want to start doing?  What do you want more of in your life?  What feelings, what activities, what energy?   What baby step can you take today?

I want to start being open to new connections and opportunities that are beneficial to my life.

STOP:  What have you had enough of?  What are you tolerating or feeding into that is not adding value to your life?  What area of your life is begging for more boundaries?

I’m going to stop retreating to observer-mode when I feel uncertain about my surroundings.

CONTINUE:  What habits or trends do you want to continue?  What’s been working for you? What can you do to ensure you keep it going?

I’m going to continue being true to myself regardless if it makes others uncomfortable.

  • 3 Blocks That Stop Big Dreams

We all know how important it is to have big dreams, but for whatever reason we tend to block ourselves from making them come true. There are three self-imposed blocks we need to pay attention to – where we come from, life, and living in our minds.

    1. You should never allow where you come from determine where you are going. Do not limit your aspirations to the neighborhood you grew up in, the school you went to, the family you are in, or the way you look. Think of anyone who is an icon…most of them did not come from easy beginnings and neither are they ashamed of it. They repeat over and over again that because they had to work hard to get where they are now, they are grounded, humble, and always helping others.

    2. Life is our most challenging ally. Sometimes it feels as if life is constantly throwing curve balls or digging pot holes in your path. It could be family issues, arguments with friends, your boss is giving you a hard time, your car breaks down on a day you cannot be late, money is tight, or you got a mosquito bite. The reason life does this is not to persuade you to stop, but rather convince you to see how important it is to continue pursuing your dream. There is a lesson you need to gain or experience in order to be ready to take the next step closer to your dream.

    3. Living in your mind is something I have been guilty of and working very hard to fix. Keeping your ideas, dreams, opinions, or just your full personality to your self causes you to miss out on opportunities that were created for you. No one around you will have any idea how brilliant you are if you do not tell them or show them. Of course, this is easier said then done. I am not comfortable “tooting my own horn,” but if no one knows what you are working for and aspire to, you will never connect with people who would love to help you.

I hope this list was helpful. There are definitely more blocks to add, but I think if we recognize these 3, we can better understand how to fix or improve ourselves. I started a dream / idea journal in January of 2013 and I think it really helped me keep on track on what I enjoy and what I wanted to achieve. Pick one of your dreams and write down what you are doing now or what you are going to do to make it come true. Then, watch yourself succeed.

  • How To Be Selfish And Happy

Following my “make it count” philosophy for 2014, I developed a strategy to be selfish (in a positive way) and happy. I am one of those people who tend to be overwhelmingly generous with everyone I interact with and everything I do with out expecting a reward. Even though I figured this genuine caring sentiment would be reciprocated, I realized that I was jeopardizing my own happiness. If you pause and discover that no one around you is putting in effort that is equal to or beyond what you do, it is time to re-evaluate your priorities. This does not mean you allow your experiences to jade your view on life, but instead find strength in putting ‘you’ first. Accept the fact that not everyone around you deserves your time or skills and do not feel guilty about saying “no.” Wisely choosing when to be accessible, why you want to help someone, and who you interact with can do wonders in removing negativity from your mind. You can then clearly focus on the people who benefit from your shining qualities and appreciate your existence. In return, others who share your values and can help you will be drawn to you by your positive vibes.
