Our First Burgundy Was Extra Fabulous

Coming to the other side of a project or experience can be filled with so many mixed emotions. Do you remember when I shared details and reflections leading up to the first Burgundy event? Now, the debut edition of Burgundy is complete. The week after was filled with dismantling props, packing up decor, returning clothing and lights, and settling payments. Plus, receiving feedback from those who attended Burgundy. Two weeks after we were following up with payments and bills that others were dragging their feet with. Plus, receiving excuses from those who did not attend Burgundy.

Even though we tried to rest a little, our imaginations and commitments were still in full gear. Two weeks after the first event, we began coordinating the next Burgundy event, producing the behind-the-scenes documentary, and launching the official website to expand the brand.

It has continued to be an adventure. But, let’s breathe and indulge in the reflections and experiences.

Throughout all of this, I have been balancing my mixed emotions.

Overall, I am grateful for this experience. It feels so special to see ideas become a reality at this scale. Burgundy expanded my comfort zone and enhanced my belief in myself. I have been someone who prefers to only share things after they are complete. Even then, I might not mention everything if I feel it would not be valued in that environment. I also tend to stay in the background, while being more focused on showcasing others. The way things changed and pivoted leading up to the event caused me to evolve in my perspective on doing things.

As I mentioned previously, collaboration was an important focus for this event. This was supposed to be a platform that everyone involved could leverage for individual and collective opportunities and success. Funnily enough, not everyone understood the assignment.

A common thread I noticed among almost everyone we brought on board for Burgundy was the narrative about how they had been burned before in their industry. They did not feel appreciated or respected. Some would move and leave if they were given the opportunity. In contrast, during our discussions and preparations, the majority of them seemed excited and encouraged at the opportunity to be part of Burgundy.

However, that excitement and encouragement did not translate for everyone. On the day of the event, people who were supposed to support, perform, and deliver pulled out at the last minute. Leaving myself and my co-organizer, Nii, holding up most of the event on our own. But, as always, the show must go on.

This was when one of my philosophies kicked into full gear: “You gotta be ready, so you don’t have to get ready.”

For example, I led the fashion show. Initially, the plan was to curate other designers to style the fits to follow our Afrofuturism theme. This theme is from my fantasy sci-fi story and animation series. (Yes, books and animations are in our near future. I will be sharing more soon) Due to hesitancy (or lack of interest), we had to pivot to compensate. I brought out my Bandele Muse designs and mixed them with 3 other designers, this included Wear Ghana, Klinpero Styles, and Alt&Quint. To connect the theme, I introduced to the public, for the first time, the characters for the Bandele Muse story. These were things that were already created or drafted, but needed a push to polish them and put them out there.

So, if you are creating something that you feel no one is watching or valuing yet, do not be discouraged. Go as far as you can. The opportunity will come to bring it to life at a larger scale when you least expect it.

One more example, shall we? For the photo exhibition, we planned to use a certain portion of the venue that was upstairs. Construction on that side was still needed to set up lights, paint, and furniture. Initially, the owner assured us that work would be done in preparation for the event. Time passed. Excuses were made. Comments about us being too ambitious were shared. The work was not done. Again, we had to pivot. We had to switch to the garden portion of the venue. Thanks to brainstorming between us and one of our decor vendors, we used trusses in the garden to create a mini-museum for the photo exhibit. This ended up being a better option as it made it easier for our guests to enjoy the exhibition.

So, remember, the answer “no” can lead you to a more aligned option. Also, try your best to never settle.

Of course, the event was still fabulous. Our guests had the chance to indulge in the exhibition, enjoy the fashion show, live performances, and dance floor, plus participate in wholesome networking. For most of the time, I was focused on hosting and managing. I am grateful I did get a chance to sit or pause to observe our guests a few times. They had so much fun! Different generations and cultures enjoying art, music, and conversations together. It was beautiful to see.

(If you would like to see more photos and clips from this event, check out our Instagram page here: Burgundy Experience)

This variety of challenges and miracles got me thinking. My focus is no longer on placing collaboration as the priority. Audacity is the key.

Collaboration can start the conversation, but audacity will deliver results.

Collaboration can inspire ideas, but audacity will empower tangibles.

Collaboration can keep you looping in vibes, but audacity will take you to the next level of wisdom.

This is not to sound harsh, but some people are just not ready yet. And that is ok.

Instead of focusing on how people receive, focus more on your role and your lane. The challenges, experiments, and mysteries make your story more beautiful. Some of it can be hurtful, but there is still so much to learn from it all. This has helped me not to lose sight of the beauty, lessons, and divine guidance that are behind all of this.

The people who did show up made a big difference. From our media crew, to our MC, to our DJ, to our performers, to our vendors, to our supporters…I say a big thank you to all of you.

  • To Morocco, With Love: Travel Guide

To Morocco, With Love: Travel Guide

There is a certain freedom in being present while experiencing something new. Travel can do that to you. Like flying a magic carpet, it can feel unbelievable and simple at the same time. I spent New Year’s in Morocco. This was my first visit to the northern region of the Royal Continent and it was more magical than I could have ever imagined. There is so much to soak in that one really needs to stay for a couple of months. I spent 6 days based in Marrakech and took 2 day trips to Rabat and Ouarzazate. All three cities are unique and I hope this post helps to inspire you to visit.

    Marrakech

A crisp morning in Marrakech starts at 10am, a wonderful time in my opinion. Along with the birds singing, you can hear the faint sound of Arabic and French spoken everywhere. Then there’s the sound of motors passing by, from old taxis and mopeds to shining new range rovers. The architecture in Marrakech is so picturesque. Between the old city and new city, European and African style is all blended with red bricks and walls. It is really beautiful.

Marrakech is a vibrant and artistic city. A paradise for photographers, foodies, history buffs, antique collectors, and of course…tourists. It is overwhelming and exciting at the same time. It is built in a way that makes it easy to walk around, which makes it even more fun to explore. We were lucky to have our stylish family friends show us around.

I stayed at the Movenpick Marrakech hotel. This place was gorgeous! Every corner of this hotel was breathtaking. The customer service was royal and the food was top-notch. Their buffet spread for breakfast was so elegant and had every choice you could think of. The rooms were comfortable and  I really loved the details of the decor, from the marble architecture to the colorful furniture.

I also did a few photoshoots at this beautiful hotel. Stay tuned for those photos in my next post.

    Rabat

Rabat is another beautiful city in Morocco. It is also unique. One part has the Parliament building and pretty avenues lined up with shops and cafés. Down a few blocks and closer to the shore are these blue mazes lined up with artisans and shops. We were so lucky to have connected with a lovely professor from Morocco. She gave us a wonderful tour.

The Hassan Tower was such a beautiful and somber place to visit. The guards on horseman at the entrance plus the tower and columns are very impressive. The call for prayer occurred while we were there and it was interesting to observe people come together to pray. Historically, the Hassan Tower is an incomplete mosque that was intended to be the largest minaret in the world. Construction began in 1195, but stopped in 1199 after the Sultan died. The tower stands 140 feet tall.

Kasbah des Oudaias is the blue maze in Rabat. Filled with artisans, shops, and cafés, it makes for a really beautiful walk. I could not get enough of all the ornate doors and fountains and tile details.

    Ouarzazate

Driving up the Atlas Mountains really looked (and felt) like a secret agent movie. The road weaves around the mountains with sharp turns and steep cliffs. The views were absolutely breathtaking.

I also noticed something. Cats run (or protect?) the cities and dogs live solely in the mountains. I did not get a chance to ask whether this was done deliberately, but I think I might be on to something.

    Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel

Atlas Corporation Studios is a film studio in Ouarzazate. Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and The Mummy (just to name a few Hollywood titles) were filmed there. The city is built like a movie world. There are film motifs adorned on every street intersection. Almost everyone who lives there has played an extra in a film. There is even a hotel named after Oscar (the award).

Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel 39Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel 36Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel 37Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel 38

It is the largest film studio in the world, measured by acres, which is mostly desert and mountains. It also has a cinema museum that features more sets. I really loved the camera room. They had film cameras ranging back to Charlie Chaplin through to today. It was so cool!

    Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel

As cool as this all was, it seemed bitter-sweet. It felt like everything was built and set up for an abundant industry, but the party never showed up. It felt more like a historical landmark, even though they are open for business. Apparently there is more competition for desert scenes…the recent Star Wars movie was filmed in Tunisia (not space). But it does not seem as if African filmmakers are using it much. I am not sure if this depends on politics or funding or a combination of both, but I felt like it is a beautiful studio with a lot of potential that is not being used to the fullest. Nonetheless, they have done very well to preserve the history of film here. I loved it.

    Travel Tips

Now that you are convinced to visit to Morocco, let’s talk about some tips. I did a lot of research to prepare for my trip, from required travel documents to best places to take photos. In particular, I was looking for information about women traveling to Morocco. Even though Morocco is accepting of all religions, I understood it was a majority Muslim country and I wanted to respect the culture.

    Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel

I chose to pack a wardrobe that was modest in accentuating my curves or skin. From what I could see, what women wear in Morocco ranges from traditional robes to modern jeans. However, those wearing mini skirts or crop tops tend to be expats. Everyone we interacted with, regardless of gender, were polite and respectful. Funnily enough, the only time someone called out to us was in the Souks in Marrakech, when a man called us The Obamas…which we all know is a compliment, so that was cool.

The posts I found helpful in preparing for travel, in terms of what to bring, were from Women on the Road, The Hostel Girl, and The World Pursuit.

Of course, I also used Instagram for research and inspiration. The posts I found helpful in planning my trip, in terms of what to see and do, were from Monroe Steele, Visiter L’Afrique, and Spirited Pursuit.

In Marrakech, you must also visit and experience Chez Ali. It is a dinner and fantasia show that is incredible. The food was delicious, the location is breathtaking, and the entertainment is delightful.

The souks in Marrakech are also fun and you will feel overwhelmed by all the beautiful craftsmanship. Due to traveling with a carry-on as my main case, I bought smaller things. However, there are some stores that offer shipping, which is very convenient.

    Dagny Zenovia Morocco Travel

Overall, I really enjoyed my trip. It was so exciting and refreshing to explore and observe such a beautiful country. There is so much I still would love to see, which is why I will most likely be back. I would highly recommend adding Morocco to your travel list.

Where have you traveled that you absolutely loved? Would you visit Morocco? Let me know in the comments.

Super Bowl 51 in Houston: Photo Recap

Houston celebrated Super Bowl 51 for two weeks and it was very exciting. It was so cool to see the city dressed up to showcase all the industries and cultures that are here. The main attraction was at Discovery Green, which was transformed into a Super Bowl theme park. I visited it three times, one to just walk around and take photos, two to see Robert Glasper and Solange perform for free, and three to visit the NFL Experience exhibit. To be honest, I am not a football fanatic, but I think Houston did a great job to create an experience that everyone could enjoy.

Via Colori Street Painting Festival in Houston: Photo Recap

This was the last event I attended in the fall before switching into gear to study for final exams. Thus, I am barely posting the photos now instead of in November. Better later than never, right? Anyway, I really enjoyed this festival. There were so many cultures and talents showcased in a space that was fun and interactive. Proceeds from the Via Colori Street Painting Festival went to the Center for Hearing and Speech to continue serving children with hearing loss. If you are in town during the next festival, you definitely do not want to miss it.

  • Future of Fashion in Houston: Event Recap

Future of Fashion in Houston: Event Recap

When you think of fashion capitals, what city comes to mind? New York? Paris? Milan? Tokyo? Those are all true, but with technology and social media, new cities are gradually finding their place in the fashion world. Houston might be one of those cities. I had the pleasure of attending the “Future of Fashion” speaker series at Kit and Ace in Rice Village. It was hosted and curated by David Rochez, style blogger at fromNYtoTX, and featured an insightful panel discussing fashion in Houston and the future of fashion around the world.

    dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston9dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston5

First, if you are looking for a cool place to host an event, you should check out Kit and Ace. The store has a modern and edgy vibe with a nice clothing selection. The space is perfect for an intimate mixer, panel, or pop-up shop. DJ Anarchy provided the soundtrack and maintained the best mix of soul, hip-hop, and R&B I had not heard in a while.

    dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston8

The panel included Mara, life and style blogger at Malibu Mara, David Rodriguez, head chef at Tout Suite, and Kalan Laws, style blogger at Señor Guapo. The question as to whether Houston will ever catch up to be considered a fashion capital had mixed responses. On the one hand, it is obvious that an interest in the arts is gradually growing in Houston. Everyone who attended provided great street style. A lot of big name brands and stores are opening in Houston. However, Houston was built as an oil and gas hub and, like most of Texas, maintains a conservative character. Kalan noted that anything avant-garde or cutting edge is still considered weird in Houston. David Rodriguez shared his experience in Houston visiting upscale restaurants and being made to feel he did not belong there. Mara mentioned how the big brand stores that are moving to Houston are not catering to millennials who are into fashion but more for the luxury side of Houston. All the panelists agreed that it is up to the millennials of Houston (who are born after 1980) to make Houston a fashion forward city.

    dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston2dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston4

I agree that Houston’s extreme temperature and mode of transportation requires creativity to adapt its version of fashion. Unlike other fashion capitals, it is difficult to develop street style in a place that does not have pedestrians. We drive everywhere and are always battling heat waves, hurricanes, floods, and mosquitos. In spite of all of that, we still know how to clean up and show up to events like this.

    dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston7dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston3

The dark side of fashion was also discussed. Fast-fashion, which includes H&M, Forever 21, and Zara, is continually destroying our planet and violating human rights. All the panelists noted that the re-emergence of thrifting for kids from all economic demographics is a way to be fashionable and avoid contributing to the continued destruction of our planet.

    dagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhoustondagnyzenovia_futureoffashioneventhouston6

What does the future of fashion look like? As people, regardless of race, status, or beliefs, we connect through fashion, music, and food. This might bring us even closer in the future.

I really enjoyed this event and am looking forward to more events like this in Houston. Make sure you follow all the bloggers mentioned to stay up to date with cool events and fashionable photos from Houston.

What do you think is the future of fashion? Let me know in the comments below.
