Could I be a farmer?
I might not have a green thumb, but I am seriously interested in learning more about agriculture. Where should I invest? What should I plant? Who should I support?
So, in the spirit of learning, I had the pleasure of attending the Ghana Agri Tech Fair in Accra. It was encouraging to see the variety of initiatives and options here. Among many things, I noticed the majority of the exhibitors and vendors are young people. Some recent graduates. I thought that was wonderful.
Of course… my next question…in my head….how do we maintain this enthusiasm?
I am imagining a whole ecosystem. As an individual, it makes sense for me to cultivate my own vegetable garden. But is that enough? If the rest of the environment is contaminated or underserved, how could my garden survive? If I was building an apartment compound or townhouse estate, I would include a garden for all the residents to cater to and harvest. If I was building a commercial center that included museums, shops, theaters, and restaurants, I would add a park and garden so that students can volunteer to take care of it. If I was delegating investments, I would prioritize roads, storage, and retail demand for farmers.
I feel there is more to agriculture than carrying the “organic” label. But, maybe this is too much to start with. What do you think? Share with me in the comments. Let’s continue the conversation.
