Finding My Glow with Ethical Style Journal

I believe people cross your path for a reason. To share an opportunity, a lesson, or a memory. There are no coincidences. Funnily enough, working with Katie Pruett and Ethical Style Journal was a combination of all three. An opportunity to be featured in a wonderful magazine, a lesson in healing myself, and an amazing experience that left a lasting memory. Sounds too good to be true, right? I had a lot of fun collaborating with them. Here is a peek at what it took to put this feature together, some exclusive photos, and where you can order your copy.

Earlier this year in April, Katie reached out to me on Instagram and via e-mail for an opportunity to be featured in the summer issues of her magazine Ethical Style Journal. Let me give you a tip on collaborating with fellow creatives and influencers because this is a prime example of how to do it right. Her e-mail was detailed and insightful. It was obvious that she had seen my work and photos, understood my message, and connected the dots that our brands would be perfect for each other. It was also apparent, in her first e-mail, that she had a substantial vision for what she wanted in this issue, the feature she wanted to produce, and how I could fit in all of that. The Instagram DM was just a heads up about the e-mail for a potential collaboration. After collaborating with a number of people and brands, I can say that regardless of what industry you’re in, how many followers you have, or what budget you’re working with, professionalism goes a long way and should never be cut short. I could tell Katie really believed in her magazine not only by what she told me but also from her previous work. That made me even more excited to contribute to the project.

The first part of this project was the personal essay I wrote, “Finding Comfort in Your Glow.” It is my reflections on the process I went through to embrace my beauty and advise on how others can do the same. Writing this piece was a fascinating experience because it made me re-live pain, healing, and triumphs in a way I did not realize I needed. Sometimes when we insist on moving on from things that hurt us or disappoint us, we tend to ignore it instead of heal it. I realized that growing into this space where I am comfortable in my own skin, I had avoided taking care of a few scars. That is what was so beautiful about writing this piece. I was actually practicing what I was preaching.

Here is an excerpt from the feature:

“This life pulls us through a unique journey. Most of us start out feeling pretty content with who we are and what we look like. Then, something changes. It might have started at home, or at a visit to the grocery store, or on your first day of school. Suddenly, you are bombarded with images, opinions, and expectations. Gradually, you find yourself criticizing every aspect of your existence. Next thing you know, you see the Grinch instead of your own reflection in the mirror. Ok, it possibly was more subtle than that, but at some point the downward spiral of self-hate makes you wonder, “How did I get here?”

Funny you ask that. Did you not bring yourself here? Or were you influenced by something else? Such as social media or mainstream standards? That is where I feel we start to examine the heart of this issue. How can we embrace our own beauty in an environment that thrives on making us feel inadequate? I want to share with you how I answered that question and how you can learn to embrace your own beauty.”

The second part of this project was the photoshoot. Katie and her friend Sharmon met me at Boheme. She brought a beautiful, bold dress by Reformation and a pair of really comfortable and chic sandals by Nicora. After shooting in different parts of the venue, we sat down and chatted about sustainable fashion, self publishing, lack of diverse representation in main and independent media, and so many other interesting topics. It was so nice to sit and chat with like-minded people sharing ideas and stories. We then went to the Menil Collection to take the remainder of the photos. Overall, it was a lovely photoshoot.

Now, I am sure you are anxious to know where you can find and how you can support this project. Not only does it feature my personal essay, but it also includes articles, fashion, and women that are all breaking boundaries and making a difference to protect the planet. The magazine is available in print and digital form. You can find out more about Ethical Style Journal and order you copy on their website.

How To Have An Innovative Life + JORD Wood Watch Giveaway

Being innovative and thinking outside of the box are not only for inventors and historical figures. It is actually important to incorporate this type of thinking in your everyday life. It is easy to slip into a monotone lifestyle with responsibilities and challenges, which leads to feeling unsatisfied or disappointed. In a time where we have access to so many resources to implement any idea, it takes more effort to not become overwhelmed or just settle. This is why I feel it is important to surround yourself with inspiration: examples of others who made it happen and things that represent what you value. Understand that feeling uncomfortable is what will push you beyond feeling overwhelmed, if you accept it. Ideas that are easily accepted by others are not big enough. It might work, but it will not satisfy your desire and purpose as would an idea that others think is crazy. It is that challenge that will create something incredible rather than something convenient.

  • How To Use Your Passion

    How To Use Your Passion

You know that quote that talks about how what you are drawn to is not an accident but your passion? As inspiring as that sounds, one of the little voices in my head usually responds, “so what?” A lot of energy is put into finding your passion, but what do you do with it once you find it? Here are some tips to make sure you are using your passion in the best way possible.

    SONY DSCSONY DSC

Shift your perspective to see opportunities everywhere. Even though it is important to be clear about what you want, we tend to miss chances to get what we want by limiting our vision. Your dream may not manifest exactly as you imagined. I will admit that I am guilty of viewing most things with suspicion. Like a detective with a never-ending mystery to solve, I question everything and rarely accept something good will definitely happen. I am getting better at being open to good chances. Do not sabotage yourself by sticking to the script you wrote when you have the only copy. Miracles come in so many shapes and sizes. Learn to say yes more often…after carefully filtering out the chance that is worth your time…of course.

    SONY DSCSONY DSC

Understand you should always be learning. Your passion should never be stagnant. Be comfortable in allowing your passion to evolve and follow whatever direction it leads you to. Education is not only in books or webinars. It is also in people and places. Pick up random projects and connect with people who enhance your work. I believe excellence is not a trophy we aspire to polish on a shelf. Rather, it is a glow we wear that shines brighter with every new level we achieve.

    SONY DSCSONY DSC

Embrace the reality check. Using your passion does not mean avoiding work. It will require patience, hustle, and resilience. People will question your judgment. Time will mock your sanity. That is all part of the experience. I think this is where schools and coaches get it wrong sometimes. Doing what you love is not about creating a Care Bear society within your bubble of existence. You need to survive in the real world. You need skills to contribute to the real market. Your passion and reality can coexist.

  • My Style + My City: Houston

My Style + My City: Houston

Style is not just about clothing and trends. It is a form of self-expression influenced by many factors…some we might not be aware of. For instance, how does your location affect your style? I am not only talking about what you pack for a trip. The city you live in holds so many nuances to inspire your style. Today I am sharing with you how my current city, Houston, influences my style. This is part of a collaboration with a fabulous group of bloggers. Make sure you read to the end to view their style and enter our giveaway.

I like to view my style as a medium through which I exercise and enhance my creativity. It started as a hobby and evolved into a signature persona. It is a mixture of 1950s classics, 1970s attitude, and futuristic sparks. It is a blend of chic, afrocentric, and retro. I have been told my style resembles Janelle Monae and Solange. They both are on my list of inspirations, along with Audrey Hepburn, Esther Quek, Lena Horne, Miranda Priestly, Diana Ross, and many others.

Houston is a big city. The 4th largest in the nation to be exact. Just like preparing for a trip, the weather and mode of transportation are the two main factors in planning your outfits. In Houston, the weather likes to play games. In one day we can go from a thunderstorm to sunny and clear to dry and windy. Next we can go for a week or two with beautiful spring or fall weather. Most people drive everywhere and the only time spent outside is intentional. Thus, fashionista’s in Houston have a keen eye in creating outfits that work with shifting temperatures and the need for comfort.

Living in Houston has added another dimension to my wardrobe by helping me feel comfortable in casual clothes. I know that sounds weird, but hear me out. In high school I repeatedly wore graphic tees, jeans, and fake converse. When I left for college, and left Texas, I wanted that next chapter to not be high school part 2. That included changing my wardrobe. I grew to prefer dressing up and got so good at it that I could put together stylish outfits everyday without skipping a beat. This also meant that the casual section of my closet faded away.

I think part of being a successful fashionista is being open to what new places can offer you. There is a time and place for everything. Looking like a futuristic Mary Poppins does not work everywhere, but I think it is always appreciated at special occasions (right?). This does not mean you should try to blend in. On the contrary, you should try to have fun. Style in Houston is unique. There is no one-size-fits-all uniform to be considered stylish. I have seen a range of fabulous looks from cowboy boots to grunge jackets to dapper suits to urban chic to thrift elegance. There is room to create your own niche. Some trends I am looking forward to in Houston for the Spring include: Spanish floral patterns and light weight denim.
